Our Journey Begins
OpenRoutes was born from a simple dream shared by three passionate Australian adventurers in 1999. Marcus Thompson, a former park ranger from Kakadu, Elena Rodriguez, a marine biologist who fell in love with the Great Barrier Reef, and James Mitchell, a cultural anthropologist fascinated by Aboriginal heritage, united their expertise to create something extraordinary. They recognized that Australia's tourism industry was missing authentic, educational experiences that truly honored the continent's natural wonders and indigenous culture.
Starting with just a single Toyota Landcruiser and boundless enthusiasm, the founders began offering small-group tours through the Northern Territory's rugged landscapes. Their first clients were backpackers seeking adventures beyond the typical tourist trail. Word spread quickly about their unique approach combining environmental education, cultural respect, and genuine Australian hospitality. By 2003, OpenRoutes had expanded operations to include Queensland's marine adventures and New South Wales' mountain expeditions.
Today, OpenRoutes stands as Australia's most trusted boutique tourism company, having guided over 15,000 travelers from 67 countries through unforgettable Australian experiences. Our commitment to small group sizes, expert local knowledge, and sustainable practices has earned us recognition as a leader in responsible tourism, while our partnerships with indigenous communities ensure authentic cultural exchanges that benefit everyone involved.
